An Island Named After A Horse

Just north of San Francisco is the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Closed in 1996, it was the first Navy base on the Pacific Ocean when it opened in 1854. One of the bases Cold War contributions was as a builder of submarines.

  1. Why is it so difficult to get the military to clear up after them?! It’s the same the world over – do you think they justify it as making an interesting photographic subject?!
