Treasure Island

Out in the middle of San Francisco bay is a little bit of land called Treasure Island that was built out of landfill to host the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition and then converted into a Navy training base for fire fighters and nuclear contamination clean-up crews. It was closed in the late 90’s and is now being redeveloped.

I Didnt Find Any Flying Saucers…

… but I did find a busted up fighter jet in a parking lot. These are a few pictures from the former Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico. The base today has been turned into an industrial park and houses a commercial aircraft bone yard (that I couldn’t manage to talk my way into).

Going Back To Castle

A few years ago I made my first trip out to the former Castle Air Force Base not only to explore the base but to check out the fabulous Castle Air Museum. Not too long ago I found myself in the area again and decided to take a second look around.

The One Month Nike

About 20 or 25 miles outside of Roswell, New Mexico, in the middle of ranch land there is a series of huge dirt berms. They are part of a never fully completed Nike missile base. It was one of two bases meant to defend the nearby Walker Air Force Base (of little green men and weather balloon fame). But for some reason the unit that was to operate it was activated in April of 1960 and deactivated in June 0f 1960 and the bases were abandoned. Today it seems to mostly be used as a place to go and shoot appliances.
