An Island Named After A Horse

Just north of San Francisco is the former Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Closed in 1996, it was the first Navy base on the Pacific Ocean when it opened in 1854. One of the bases Cold War contributions was as a builder of submarines.

Treasure Island

Out in the middle of San Francisco bay is a little bit of land called Treasure Island that was built out of landfill to host the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition and then converted into a Navy training base for fire fighters and nuclear contamination clean-up crews. It was closed in the late 90’s and is now being redeveloped.

Cold War Goodness: In The Clouds

Time for some more images from my Cold War Project shooting in the San Francisco area a few months back. These come from a Integrated Fire Control site on the California Coast a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge. The site once housed the radars that were part of the Nike missile system in the area. Its located on top of a mountain range and I have to say, its one of the most beautiful views I’ve seen in a long time.
